Obituary for Thomas J. Vallery

VALLERY, THOMAS J., 79, Elmora, passed away October 31, 2018, at Miners Medical Center, Hastings. Born April 11, 1939, in Bakerton, the son of Thomas R. and Helen (Stefanik) Vallery. Preceded in death by parents; and sisters, Jean Bobick, Betty Raynish, Barbara Ertter, Helen Joy Weakland, and Karen Weiland. Survived by loving wife of 54 years, Shirley A. (Polisky) Vallery; daughter, Jean Ann (Rodney) Harbrige, St. Benedict; son, Thomas J. Vallery Jr., Elmora; granddaughters, Lacey Jane Shingle and Heather Therese Harbrige. Brother of Lois O’Connor, Butler and Patrick Vallery, Bakerton. Also survived by mother-in-law, Teresa Polisky, Northern Cambria. Tom was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He cherished time with his family. A member of St. Benedict Catholic Church, Carrolltown. He loved the outdoors, hunting and fishing as well as watching sports. His love of sports began at an early age and he excelled in all sports. He played baseball for the Bakerton Fence Busters and Carrolltown American Legion. He served as a lifeguard for the Bakerton swimming pool. During his high school years, Tom excelled in track and field consistently placing first in the 100 and 200 yard dash as well as the broad jump. A standout member of the John Carroll High School football team, Tom played for the 1955 championship team as a junior and then as a senior he finished as the third highest in scoring for the entire district. His football career continued in college, as he played for Millersville University until an injury ended his career. From there he began a 43 year career working for Pepsi Cola in Johnstown. In the community, Tom was a member of Bakerton Athletic Club, Rembrandt Club, Carrolltown Fire Club, social member of Carrolltown American Legion and St. Benedict VFW. He was one of the incorporating members of the Bakerton Rod & Gun Club. Friends will be received from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. Friday, November 2 at Moriconi Funeral Home, Inc, Northern Cambria and from 10:00 a.m. Saturday at St. Benedict Church where funeral mass will begin at 11:00 a.m. Fr. Jude Brady, OSB, celebrant. Committal, Sacred Heart Cemetery, Elmora.
