Obituary for Harry R. Altimus

ALTIMUS, HARRY R., 95, Belsano. Went home with the Lord August 26, 2018 at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center. Born December 21, 1922, in Indiana County, PA. Son of the late Russell and Grace(Helman) Altimus. Preceded in death by parents; wife, the former Margaret (Nyland) Altimus, who he married just one day prior to leaving for the service and who died May 23, 2018, ending 75 years of marriage; brothers, Oren, Bill, Ben, Lug and sister, Patricia Huffman. Survived by children, Ruth (Bob) Madill, Mentor, OH; Harry John Altimus, Belsano; and Tina (Keith Lantzy) Bracken, Belsano; grandchildren; Shawn (Danielle) Madill, Madison OH; Brian (Stacie) Madill, Aurora, OH; Bill (Tanya) Altimus, Nanty-Glo; Tonya (Pete Hutchings) Bracken, Pittsboro, NC; great-grandchildren, Danica, Jadyn, Molly, Ben, Landen, Brennan, Connor, Addison Jude, Symon Tait & Jinger Paige. Brothers of, Jim, Dick, Doris Jean Kisic and Janet Janosik. Harry was a World War II Veteran, serving as a Machine Gunner with company D 328th Regiment 26th Infantry Division 3rd Army in France, Luxembourg, Belgium, Germany, and Czechoslovakia, Battle of the Bulge and Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force. He was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze star for his heroic efforts. Harry worked the majority of his life in the coal mines, retiring from Central Cambria Drilling. He was a past Commander of Steve Klosz VFW, Twin Rocks; Past President of The Blue Goose Sportsman Club; member of The Coal Country Auto Club and a member of The Belsano Methodist Church. Harry was an avid gardener, best known for his monumental Rhododendron bush and enjoyed his antique cars.
Harry and Margaret were the most incredible Father & Mother and will be missed dearly by all. A celebration of life service will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Foundation in Harry’s name. Moriconi Funeral Home, Inc., Northern Cambria, is in charge of arrangements.
