Herman Nealen Obituary

Nealen, Herman Joseph, 91, Nicktown, died peacefully on Thursday, November 24, 2022, at home.  Herman was born March 10, 1931, the son of Joseph Hilarion and Bertha (Sherry) Nealen.  Herman was predeceased by his parents, his brother Richard, and sisters, Lillian, Agnes, Edna, and Helen.  He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Anita (Veneskey), and children: Jean Ballas (Paul); Susan (Robert Reardon); Ann Nealen Ziner (Tal McGary); Charles (Kathy); Dennis; Nancy McKee (Ken); Norma; Theresa Galantino; Theodore (Susi); Rebecca Ellis; Raymond (Coleen); Paul (Vida Irani); Pauline Paletta (David); and Michele (Jacob Jones).  Herman leaves behind 31 precious grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren.  He is also survived by his sisters: Joyce Westrick; and Dolores Palmer.  Herman will be remembered for his tenacity and endurance and working his farm into his 90’s.  He also enjoyed walking the woods to cut & gather firewood.  Although macular degeneration took his eyesight, he managed to produce many wooden tables, swings, and knick-knacks for both St. Nicholas Church picnics and for his children.  His tender gentle demeanor was hidden beneath his hard-working ethic.  Herman was a lifetime member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church where he belonged to Holy Name Society and Legion of Mary.  Anita and Herman were fervent supporter of St. Nicholas Catholic School and Bishop Carroll Catholic High School.  They were co-recipients of the Bishop Carroll Catholic High School 2012 Cornerstone Award in recognition of their many sacrifices and their determination to seek a Catholic education for their family, which then extended to many grandchildren as well.  No public viewing will be held.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, November 29, 2022, at St. Nicholas Catholic Church.  Fr. Jeremiah Lange, OSB, PhD, celebrant.  Interment at St. Nicholas Catholic Cemetery.  Moriconi Funeral Home, Inc., Northern Cambria, in charge of arrangements.  Charitable contributions may be made to St. Nicholas Catholic School or to Bishop Carroll Catholic High School.  Family requests that masks be worn by those attending funeral mass due to health concerns.
