LIEB, MARIE CARMINE, 90, Nicktown, passed away September 12, 2024. Born January 15, 1934, in Spangler, daughter of Emmett and Marie Ettea (Dick) Byrnes. Preceded in death by husband, Cpt. Charles A. Lieb (363rd Infantry, Company A); parents; brothers, William, Andrew, Robert, Joseph, James, Francis, John and Patrick; sisters, Edith (Byrnes) Gill, and Mary Elaine Byrnes; son-in-law, Joseph Noel, as well as several sisters and brothers in law. Survived by children, Donna, wife of Joseph Driskel, Nicktown; Kathy, wife of Leo McCombie, Nicktown; David, husband of Sharon (Miller), Port Matlida; and Trisha Lieb, with special friend, Joe Kline, Nicktown; four grandchildren, Katrina (McCombie), wife of Andrew Cidor, Nicktown; Lauren, Adam and Dillon Lieb, all of Port Matilda; sisters-in-law, Theresa Lieb, Nicktown and Jane Byrnes, Ohio; and brother-in-law Bede Lantzy, Patton, and various nieces and nephews. Carmine was born as the youngest child in a distinctively Irish family and survived some of the harshest times in our nation’s history. Her birth occurred in the midst of The Great Depression, she was a child as World War II ravaged the world, and she came of age during the peak of the Cold War. Despite these hard times, however, Carmine never lost her faith or charm. When recalling her youth in Hastings, Carmine’s eyes always grew distant, but her voice remained joyful. She would detail her walks to school, her daily rush home for lunch with her mother, her work at the shirt factory, and her happy memories with her siblings. In photos, one can often find a young, but striking, Carmine seated around the table with her older brothers and sisters as they included her in their late-night piano revelry. As Carmine grew older, she maintained loving relationships with all of her siblings, but none more so than Elaine “Misses” and Robert “Bob”. In both her youth and her old age, these two loved ones remained her dearest and most beloved confidants. After marrying Charles in 1958, Charles and Carmine moved into a small, but well-loved, house in the heart of Nicktown to start a family. Over the years, the community would come to know Carmine as the friendly face behind the counter of the United States Postal Service, Nicktown branch, the unwaveringly devout woman in the back pew of the Saint Nicholas Roman Catholic Church, and perhaps most importantly, the dedicated mother to four lively children. Carmine was also more intimately known, amongst her closest friends and family, as a talented pianist and performer. When reminiscing, Carmine’s children liken her singing voice to that of Judy Garland and her dancing to that of Ginger Rogers. Carmine continued to play her household piano for most of her life and forever enjoyed listening to the soft compositions of others. As she aged, Carmine’s devotion to her family never faded. She lived fully for the happiness of her children and grandchildren, meticulously following their accomplishments and offering her support at every turn. Carmine’s love and care will be forever missed, and evenings will seem empty without her goodnight phone calls. For all of those in the community that had the pleasure of knowing Carmine, Nicktown will now seem terribly empty without her gentle presence at the end of the street. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, September 17, 2024, at St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church. Father Jeremiah Lange O.S.B., PhD celebrant. Interment St. Nicholas Cemetery.
