Mary Lou Shortencarrier Obituary

MARY LOU SHORTENCARRIER “Lu Lu”, 78, Hastings, passed away February 15, 2025.  Born July 3, 1946, in Barnesboro, the daughter of Louis and Anna (Lechinsky) Riva.  Preceded in death by parents; and sister and brother-in-law, Bernardine & Joseph Lauer.  Survived by loving husband of 56 years, William J. Shortencarrier; daughter, Renee Schreyer, Hastings; son, William (Beth) Shortencarrier, Boyce, VA; and grandchildren, Michaela and Morgan Schreyer.  Also survived by siblings, Joan (James) Connors, MD; Dolores (Joseph) Trentini, Johnstown; and Louis Riva, Patton.   Mary Lou and Bill became high school sweethearts “going steady” since sophomore year.  Their love and commitment would begin a life journey that was to last the next 62 years.  A kind and compassionate person by nature, Lu Lu attended Clearfield Hospital School of Nursing and obtained her Registered Nursing Degree in 1967.  Upon completion of their studies, Bill and Mary Lou married August 3, 1968. Together they raised their children and enjoyed the blessings of a family centered life.  She was a wonderful cook and enjoyed gardening and canning vegetables, especially tomatoes and tomato soup with her dad.  The grandchildren were a true joy for her, and she loved attending all their activities and being a part of their achievements through the years.  Many weekends in the fall were spent attending Pitt football games as a family.  And all through these years, she loved her work as she cared for others in our community as a Geriatric Nurse at HAIDA and Hillsdale Nursing homes.  She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.  A memorial service honoring her life will be announced in the future.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hastings Area Ambulance Association.  The family would like to thank the staff of St. Benedict Manor for their excellent care and support they provided during her illness.  Moriconi Funeral Home, Inc.
