SMITH, ROBERT J., 80, Nicktown, passed away April 16, 2026, at Indiana Regional Medical Center, Indiana. Born June 5, 1945, in Twin Rocks, PA, the son of George and Agnes (Watt) Smith. Preceded in death by parents; brothers, Roy, Earl, Fred, and Don Smith; and sister, Ruth Gallagher. Survived by loving wife of 58 years, Geraldine “Dean” (Duman) Smith, the love of his life. They met at the young ages of 13 and 15 fast becoming young sweethearts who would marry young, raise their family guided by their strong Catholic faith, and remain committed spouses, loving parents, and proud grandparents over the next nearly 60 years. Their example of lasting love and commitment to family has been a tremendous gift. Also survived by children, Debbie (Paul) Witenski, Northern Cambria; Glenn (Shaylynn) Smith, North Carolina; Tina Smith, North Carolina; and Russell Smith, Rochester, PA; the grandchildren he adored, Nicholas (Marlee) Smith, Travis Smith, Devin (Molly) Smith, Christofer Witenski, and Emma Hofer. He was looking forward to the first great-grandchild expected this summer. Brother of Dave (Anita) Smith, IL; George Smith, Lou (Eunju) Smith, Theresa Smith, and Florine (Robert) Barile, all of Ohio. He was a proud veteran US Army SP4 E4 (T) serving from 1964 – 1970. Member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church, Nicktown. Retired coal miner from Greenwich Colleiries. He was an avid outdoorsman and member of the NRA and Blue Goose Sportsman Club. In his free time, he enjoyed working with his hands and was a “jack of all trades”—having built the family home, barn, sheds, and ponds on the property. He lovingly cared for their home and taught his sons many of these important skills along the way. He was always eager to lend a hand to anyone in need and was relied on by many as an able helper. He enjoyed woodworking and gave many of his projects to family and friends as gifts they will cherish. Above all, his family was his most important focus, and he looked forward to the many gatherings and celebrations they shared. Family and friends will be received from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. Sunday, April 19, at Moriconi Funeral Home, Inc., Northern Cambria. Military honors will begin at 9:00 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Monday at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, Nicktown, Fr. Jeremiah Lange, OSB, PhD celebrant. Committal St. Nicholas Cemetery.
