Obituary for James F. Sherry

James ‘Jim’ F. Sherry, 80, passed away peacefully March 23, 2018, at home in Northern Cambria, following a courageous 11-year battle with cancer. Born on Aug. 5, 1937, a son of the late Gerald and Helen (Lantz) Sherry of Nicktown, Pa., he is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Eleanor (Hetrick) Sherry. He was preceded in death by brothers-in-law Ray and Jay Hetrick, Deacon Bernard Zernick and mother-in-law Eleanor E. Hetrick. He is survived by his brothers and sisters and their spouses: William (Shirley) Sherry, Brunswick, Ohio; Robert (Judy) Sherry, Nicktown; John (Bonnie) Sherry, Northern Cambria; Dolores Zernick; Janet (William) Kudlawiec; Geraldine (Robert) Nagle; Gary (Paulette) Sherry; Ronald (Beverly) Sherry; and Larry (Reatta) Sherry, all of Nicktown. He also is survived by a brother- and sister-in-law, Richard and Darleane (Hetrick) Lawhead of Eldred, Pa. Married on Dec. 28, 1957, he and his wife are blessed with three children and their spouses: Lynn and Joseph Figaro, Parma, Ohio; Greg and Andrea (Chappen) Sherry, Broadview Heights, Ohio; and Lisa and Patrick Powers, State College, and seven grandchildren: Caitlin and Jimmy Figaro; Noelle Rosellini; Nichole and Katie Powers; and Alex and Nathan Sherry. Always surrounded by family and friends, those who knew him well -- even beyond his many nieces and nephews -- called him “Uncle Jim,” a title he said was an honor and privilege to hold. Raised in Nicktown, Jim moved to Ohio after graduating from high school and lived there for more than 20 years before returning to Pennsylvania. He worked at American Can in Cleveland as a machinist and attended Cuyahoga Community College. He had numerous side businesses in roofing and siding. In 1980, he transferred to Butterick Co. in Altoona, Pa. as maintenance supervisor, where he worked until his retirement in 2002. Upon retiring, he built a four-car workshop, where he spent time on construction projects and crafting numerous family heirlooms with his woodworking skills. He was a member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church and served for many years as overseer of parking for the big Labor Day Picnic. Above all, he enjoyed life, and his grandchildren and family. Family and Friends will be received from 3:00- 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at Moriconi Funeral Home, Inc., Northern Cambria. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at St. Nicholas Catholic Church. Fr. Alfred Patterson, OSB, celebrant. Committal, St. Nicholas Cemetery.
